The Vision

Health Ladder is a nonprofit, personal training service based in Durham, NC, that strives to provide high quality services to those who face financial and mental barriers to fitness. We recognize that for many, the gym is expensive, inaccessible, and an intimidating environment. These factors often prevent people from both establishing and following their goals. We wanted to remove these obstacles while providing people with the opportunity to achieve their fitness goals in a cost-free, judgement-free, and worry-free environment.

The Program

Each client receives a full consultation with a trainer, which includes a thorough questionnaire to obtain biophysical information, setting progress and end goals, and workout plans. Each trainer works with their client to develop realistic, effective, and timely plans based on the client’s personal wants and needs. Examples of plans can include a weight loss program, a weight lifting program, or a cardiopulmonary health program.

The People

Health Ladder involves a team of talented, qualified individuals, namely Duke students and alumni, who have a plethora of experience with fitness.

Brian Kang

Founder, Certified Personal Trainer

Brian is a recent graduate of Duke University with a major in Biomedical Engineering and double minors in Chemistry and Medical Sociology. His interest in health disparities caused him to realize that many of the disparities are caused by the socioeconomic barriers to the gym, sparking the idea for Health Ladder. He is an avid gym-goer and has extensive experience in weight lifting. He focuses on the social and biophysical aspects of exercise and hopes that this approach helps people find a passion for fitness.
